Any special requirements
for driving in Holland?
The Dutch drive on the right and overtake on the left. Dutch roads are maintained in excellent condition. Holland has a vast canal system throughout the country with many drawbridges in cities and villages. Cobblestone streets are common from large cities to small villages and are very slippery when wet. While driving in cities or villages, it is difficult to differentiate sidewalks, streets, and pedestrian zones from the color of the cobblestones. Use extreme caution, and follow the road signs.
Particular care should be taken while driving in Amsterdam,
where Trams are frequent. Trams can't change direction: If a
sign showing a red inverted triangle appears at the approach
to a roundabout this means traffic on the roundabout has right
of way. Otherwise traffic joining the roundabout has priority.
What should I
know about Parking in Holland?
Parking is severely limited and strictly enforced, particularly in Amsterdam, where you can be fined or have your car towed away for illegal parking, or for failing to pay the necessary parking fee and displaying the ticket.
In some areas, signs marked 'I' and 'II' separated by a red
diagonal stripe may appear. These mean no parking on the left
on odd dates, no parking on the right on even dates. In cities,
you need a cardboard disc to park in "blue zone" areas.
These discs, placed on the dashboard, can be obtained at motor club
offices, tobacco shops and police stations. There is no parking where
the curb is painted black and white or yellow.

driving offenses and regularly set up roadblocks to
catch drunk drivers. People are required to stop and
submit to a breath test without ever showing signs of
drinking. Depending on the seriousness of the offense,
you will face a fine, imprisonment and revocation of your
driver's licence. Refusal to submit to an alcohol test when
requested is also an offence. Refusal is treated the same as
a high degree of intoxication.

international driver's license is required; international
